It’s nights like this when I miss staying out on the bay. Not that I can’t, but I’ve dedicated that energy to helping other anglers have that same experience, which is plenty rewarding. So, nothing is really given up here. The time spent out on the bay with friends and family, even in some of the most brutal winter weather conditions imaginable, was so enjoyable. We would watch a field of tip-ups from our warm sleeper shack, which was built from some kind of old concession wagon. The snow would start to pile up, with 30-40 mph winds whipping snow drifts around us like a fortress. Our pre-teen children at the time lived it like it was normal, while the rest of us tried to keep the Beaver Dams working and wondered, “How in the hell are we going to get off the ice tomorrow?” It was balls to the walls to the landing!
The snow tonight isn’t expected to be measurable in feet like the last winter event. That’s what they’re calling them now, “Winter Events.” I like it, and I believe they should be named like hurricanes. A forecast of 5-7 inches of snow is expected without the high winds, followed by warmer temperatures for the week. That could make travel on the bay interesting. Talking about today’s ice conditions would be reiterating the past week, and they are likely to change soon. Stay tuned!
