One of my favorite ice shacks has been on display by the Yellow Gate Ice Access for some time now. I’m starting to think it’s been positioned there for photo opportunities. Very nice!
The Michigan FREE Fishing Weekend was a big hit! Traveling across the Bay became cumbersome at times while avoiding huge fields of tip-ups. Anglers dotted the Bay in every direction, from single ice shacks to multi-shack compounds, and even a few small villages. Most ice anglers mark their tip-ups well, making them easy to navigate around. Ice etiquette dictates that you should avoid them as much as possible. However, unmarked tip-ups are usually difficult to avoid, especially in the fog we’ve experienced lately. Wind flags or minnow trips can occur unexpectedly. Close encounters or direct hits by a machine or truck can be avoided entirely with a highly visible tip-up marker. Ice anglers struggle to catch the many fish that roam the Bay. If the only measure of success is the number of iced fish you’ll be setting yourself up for disappointment. Don’t assume that all it takes is to show up; it requires much more effort than simply getting here to work these fish up a hole. The most advanced hard-water anglers on Little Bay de Noc usually catch fish every single day. It’s simply a matter of how solid was the bite or what kind of finessing did it take to entice finicky fish to consume whats being offering.
