Temperatures have hovered above freezing for the last couple of days. It’s below freezing now and will remain so until around midnight. After that, the mercury will rise again and precipitation begins early in the morning. Starting with snow early AM followed by rain, and then back to snow before the end of the day. Very little snow accumulation is expected. While slushy landings can’t be avoided, the Red Gate ice access, pictured tonight, is still slightly more favorable—primarily because of the steep slopes when approaching the ice at the Kipling Public Launch. You might rub the bumper a little, but it’s still doable. Longer trailers are sure to bottom out with some scraping when getting on and off the ice.
The warmer weather hasn’t compromised the 20 or more inches of ice on Little Bay de Noc, contrary to Lake Winnebago, which is just a few hours south. Unfortunately, the fishing portion of Battle On Bago has been canceled. However, entertainment, food, and fun will continue to benefit local youth programs, as always. All those itching to drill some holes in the ice can do so here on the Noc. The ice is almost exceptionally thick, but with minimal snow, most augers are just still reaching water, barely.
So many fish and schools in full swing, but the bite remains tough. Not impossible to hook up though; every day, anglers skilled in targeting perch and walleye seem to trigger them. With the right attitude and the discipline to change your approach, you can get them to strike too. So, I challenge you!
