Prognosticators hit the mark on this one. Whiteout conditions earlier this morning resulted in 9 inches of heavy snow accumulation. Of course, that’s not an even blanket covering the ice. Drifts are up to a couple of feet deep and feel like riding waves. There’s no slush yet on the Bay, with the exception of the landings. The Kipling launch grabbed the front of a truck this morning, so the hole that’s been opening over the last week is even bigger now. The Red Gate access is compromised. The ice sponges up water from the Days River, spewing it out and softening the ice until it’s gone. Stay away from that. Saturday is looking good for one more chance to rip some Yooper Gold through a hole in the ice. On Sunday, Mother Nature is coming to shut ‘er down hard, with the potential for over 2 feet of snow—a storm predicted to paralyze way more than just the Bay.
