A temperature of 20°, brilliant sunshine, and a bright blue sky greeted Little Bay de Noc on Monday morning. Friday’s rain and Saturday’s snow created a real mess of the thoroughfares leading from landings onto the bay. This morning’s low temperature resulted in rock-hard slush ruts from weekend traffic that can certainly test your suspension. But don’t worry, this canvas is about to change again. This afternoon’s high of 39° softened those ruts a bit, and with a high temperature above freezing expected tomorrow, those slush ruts will level off a little more. Then, get ready for freezing temperatures to continue for the foreseeable future. Remember the good old days when we used to get below-zero temperatures once in a while? Well, it’s coming! The transition from light machines to trucks as the primary mode of transportation is already underway. By the weekend, expect truck traffic to become the norm as temperatures in the teens finish this week, and below-zero temperatures are forecasted overnight starting next week. The recent weather patterns, which brought rain, sleet and snow, rising temperatures, and then freezing conditions, have worked in our favor by leveling pressure heaves and resulting in more passable areas for north and southbound ice travel.
