Little Bay de Noc has the best ice in years—over 20 inches above the narrows of Gladstone, The freeway off the Kipling public launch is in great shape and nicely groomed for almost a mile before encountering much snow. Drifted snow can be hard or soft, depending on temperatures. There are very few deep drifts, but some could cause problems. If you have one in the truck, a little shoveling can solve that. The clear skies on Saturday night, with a full moon, illuminated the bay like stadium lights. Absent the brutal winds and cold that plagued anglers the last two weeks, those who spent the night experienced ice popping louder than ever and rumbling ice quakes that shook through their shacks. Incredible, right? Maybe not for everyone, but for me and a bunch of others, we are quite fond of it. Otherwise, the next day, you wouldn’t hear people saying, “Wasn’t that great? Wow! That was awesome!” This week’s forecast into next weekend looks promising, with pleasant weather and daytime temperatures in the 20s, along with some teens and single digits overnight.
