It’s a Little Bay de Noc kind of day out there. The weather here at the shop, specifically the wind, doesn’t give a clue as to what is happening out on the open ice field. It’s 9 o’clock on Monday night. Winds are strong but nothing compared to this morning until this afternoon. Snow whipping in every direction. It was awesome!!!! Currently it’s 0° at the start of an extended period of subzero temperatures. I started running the suburban transporting anglers, gear and drop down wagons this past week, I like to stick with light machines as long as possible. That being said, once the ice attains a thickness sufficient to hold the weight of the suburban, it is more efficient and comfortable than any other option for this type of work. The snow is piling up, and the swirling winds are causing snow to drift across the Bay, with depths ranging from 2 to 12 inches. Some of the shack scabs from the weekend hold even deeper snow drifts. Got tracks? Put em on for optimal travel. There’s no fishing pressure on the bay now compared to the over 400 shacks from the weekend. The cold snap this week is reserved for the diehard ice enthusiasts who thrive in -25° windchills. It’s truly the best time to fish the Noc. Enjoy this ideal ice season to its fullest.
