Traveling out at sunrise entailed breaking through a quarter-inch of skim ice on the puddles, echoing the sounds of tiny shards of ice across the slick surface, like a bag of spilled marbles. Bright sunshine and 54°F melted the thin layer by sunset, and that’s the way it’s going to stay, with temperatures above 40°F until late Tuesday or Wednesday. The Kipling Public Launch, as well as the Red Gate Ice Access, are slushy, slippery, and sloppy, with some lumps and bumps—very typical for March. By midweek, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing, resetting the ice surface for the final weekend to target walleye. Tomorrow starts the seven-day countdown to the Michigan walleye season closing on March 15th.
