It’s hump day—not just for the week, but for the ice season as well. Logically, this would be about halfway through the ice season, with about a month and a half left for some Yooper Gold. The end of January felt like the February blues set in early. Every ice season has a cycle. First ice is usually the best, and aggressive feeding is on. After about a month of ice, the bite window seems to narrow or can even shut right down. Barometric pressure is a primary factor when fish are feeding, so focus on those times for better results. Colder temperatures, light machines followed by truck travel, and more anglers add pressure, and it all plays a part—for a while. At some point in mid-February and into March, feeding action picks up again. With ice arriving three weeks earlier this season than in recent years, hopefully, fish will start piling on the feed bag a little early as well.
