The first day of 2026 is definitely one to remember. A Suburban ventured out onto the ice, marking the beginning of truck travel. Some predicted that this mode of transportation on the Bay would happen much sooner than in recent years, and they were correct. The addition of 7 inches of well-saturated snow and below-zero temperatures provided a total thickness of 17-20 inches of ice. To all the ice experts sitting on their couch wishing instead of fishing… Go love yourself! On the other hand, if motorized transportation is your preferred method of getting around, be sure your insurance policy includes towing and recovery, with an emphasis on recovery. We also assisted anglers out onto ice today shuttling them with a Honda Pioneer tugging them out in our 21ft @canvas_by_the_stitch ASST. The prime spots are first come, first served, so getting out early provides an excellent opportunity to get on your desired structure before the masses arrive on Friday. Camp Little Bay de Noc is sure to reach capacity this weekend; check in early if you can. Ice conditions are incredible. The ability to travel the Bay is effortless on a rock-hard ice surface with plenty of traction. This doesn’t happen often and is sure to change throughout the season. Enjoy the smooth ride while you can.
