Yesterday, the bay was covered in a white layer of slushy snow. Off the Kipling Launch last evening, a single snowmobile track looped out about 75 yards and right back to the landing, leaving visible evidence of the water beneath the snow. Today, the bay has stiffened nicely: 6 inches of frozen slush, 1 inch of water, and 8 to 12 inches of ice layered in that order from top to bottom. Snowmobiles, ATVs, and UTVs are traveling the bay with ease. Shorelines have the least amount of frozen slush and the most amount of water between it and the ice. Expect to break through that top crust of slush within 50 yards of the shorelines, but once you’re out a bit, conditions are perfect. No cleats needed, and it’s game on!
