It’s been windy out there. Mr Anderson, your shack tipped over. Anybody who’s out on the ice every day will tell you that the Bay is alive and constantly changing. A couple of days ago, with a blizzard warning, I wondered what it was going to be like out there if the forecasted snow depths came to fruition. Would we need to put the tracks on Mr. B.A.? Is the slush going to mess up such a great start to the hard water season? How much snow are we really going to get? Surprisingly, no tracks were needed. In fact, the pressure cracks that were recently impassable due to larger open cracks, slush that wasn’t completely frozen, or emerging ice too high for a machine to get over without a launch code—Mother Nature has solved that. She did the equivalent of self-leveling compound across the Bay and tuck-pointed pressure heaves with slush. A nice solid layer of 7 inches has frozen, offering excellent passage across these obstacles. This makes every landing we have in the best condition you’re ever going to experience on Little Bay de Noc. Forecasted temperatures are down to zero, with nothing above 20° for the next couple of days. A barometer slightly pushing down or equal for the days ahead marks the most extended period in months with such a steady barometer. What a great way to kick off the New Year. Fish on!!!
